The Beauty of Benidorm and Surroundings

Benidorm (Benedorm) is a town and tourist destination on the Mediterranean coast of the Costa Blanca in Spain. It is situated in the province of Alicante, which is in the region of Valencia in Eastern Spain, and is known for its vibrant night-life, year round sun, beautiful beaches, mountain scenery and its international population.

Although it has been nicknamed ‘Beniyork’ and the ‘Manhattan’ of Spain due to its high rise apartment block and hotels, Benidorm has managed to retain much of its charm and has a beautiful Old Town area with cobbled streets, old churches and traditional Spanish buildings. However, its 6km of golden, sandy beaches is the main reason for it being so popular with tourists from all over the world (more on Benidorm tourist information here).

Getting to Benidorm

Benidorm is the ideal destination to find cheap holiday packages and it is also nice and easy to get to. Benidorm is only about an hour’s drive (60km) from El Altet Alicante Airport (sometimes even called Benidorm airport :-) )along the main E15 coast road. Alicante Airport can be reached in about 2 hours from many UK destinations and also has flights coming in from many other countries. There are many car rental companies at the airport, or you can take a taxi or catch the hourly bus from Alicante airport to Benidorm.
It is possible to reach Benidorm by train as it has a train station in the Old Town area and also another by Carrefour in Finestrat.

Weather and Climate

The climate of the Costa Blanca and therefore the Benidorm weather is described by the World Health Organization as one of the healthiest in the world. Benidorm is surrounded by mountains and so even has its own year round micro-climate, giving it an annual average temperature of 19.3ºC and around 325 days of sun per year
fantastic!
Summer temperatures in Benidorm range from 25ºC to 35ºC, although it can reach 40ºC in August. However, humidity tends to be low so the heat is bearable. Average winter temperatures range from 11ºC to 15ºC and the wettest month tends to be October with an average rainfall of 86mm.

Beaches

There are many superb beaches in and around Benidorm and many of them hold Blue Flag awards for their facilities, clean sands and clean water to bathe in. Here are just a few of the top beaches in this area:

  • Levante Beach
This beach, also known as the ‘Sunrise Beach’, has 2km of fine golden sand, holds a Blue flag award and offers a good variety of water sports. It can be busy and has around 5,000 sun-loungers!
  • Poniente Beach
This beach on the western side of Benidorm, near Old Town, is quieter and is a bit more ‘Spanish’. A great family beach.
  • Albir Beach
Albir, near Benidorm, has a gorgeous pebble beach which is ideal for those who hate sand getting everywhere. There is a wide range of water-sports on offer at this beach and even a nudist beach near the Lighthouse area.
  • Cantal Roig Beach, Calpe
Calpe is situated to the north-east of Benidorm, on the coast between Altea and Moraira. Cantal Roig is a 200m long, Blue Flag beach which can be found near the harbour area.
  • Arena-Bol Beach, Calpe
This 2km long, Blue Flag beach is situated in the centre of Calpe and is renowned for its beautiful sand.
  • La Fossa
This Blue Flag beach is about 2km long and can be found between the Penon de Ifach and the Punto de Bassetes. It has a wide range of facilities and even turns into an outdoor cinema on summer evenings.

The quality of its beaches, and those of the surrounding area, combined with its climate and range of facilities, make Benidorm a sun seeker’s idea of paradise and the perfect holiday destination for young and old alike.
